Happy Birthday

Post by NigelP »

My Yeti is just coming up to its second birthday with me (this weekend), although she was a year old before I fell for her good looks. :D

Over two years I have replaced or rebuild every moving part on the bike except wheel bearings, bottom bearings (which are a bit dodgy) and headset. :(

Roll of honour: replaced parts:

4 chains
3 cassettes
2 sets of chainrings
Carbon seat post
3 sets of bottom suspension bearings
4 burst/split tyres
Countless inner tubes
3 spokes
2 sets of pedals
1 rear hanger
1 seat
1 front mech
1 rear mech
Dog bone
Updated, then replaced 5th Element rear shock
Rebuilt Pace RC 40 forks and replaced complete stanchion.
New seals and rebuild Hope brakes
2 sets of brake pads
4 complete sets of gear cable outers and 6 or so cables
Countless patches, to stop rubbing
1 Mud guard
1 bike pump
2 saddle bags
1 Camelback
1 Banana guard

Is this still the same bike I fell in love with :?:

(At least I can rebuild my bike, my body's not so forgiving  )

The Banana guard is an essential part of the proprietary engine system. However, eco friendly alternatives of lukewarm porridge and date blocks are being tested as substitutes.

It does, however, sometimes bring on feelings of inadequacy and acute embarrassment.

You had to replace a banana guard!? What happened to the first one??

And what is the dog bone for?? Visions of you carrying one in case of attack from a ferocious hound - bit worrying that you have only replaced it once though - must pong a bit by now

My trusty steed also approaches a birthday - it's first (with me or anyone else for that matter). My roll of honour is a wee bit shorter:

1 chain
1 split tyre
Countless inner tubes
1 Mud guard
1 bike pump
1 saddle bag
1 Camelback
1 rear shock mounting bush
1 rear wheel (to be fair - only the hub died!)

Definitely still love it though :D :D

Clear proof if ever there was that my reputation as a bike wrecker is completely unjustified.

Since I swapped all the components from my hard tail on to the full sus last July, the list is:

A handful of inner tubes
Rear cassette - it had previously done almost a year on the hard tail
Chain - ditto
Granny & Middle front chain rings - ditto
2 sets brake pads
1 bottom bracket & replacement crank
2 tyres
Approx 100ml of brake fluid
A service on the rear shock
1 set of pivot bearings (the originals were shot when I got the frame)

Apart from the rear shock everything else had done good service on the hard tail before coming across so had already seen plenty of active service.

Nigel what do you do to your bike :?:

Hi Viv,

The ‘dog bone’ is a mechanical protuberance which allows Yeti to charge a huge premium for its bikes. I am not sure what it does, but I think it is more that distracting rabid dogs. I have noticed however, that I am far more likely to be attacked by these animals in Turkey, when I am not on my own bike; so maybe it works in a mysterious way.

I am pleased to say that I have put my body armour through the wash. Hopefully the smell will improve and I do try to stay downwind on the fast bits.

Ah, the banana guard. You missed this incident, which happened in the Lakes. While practicing manuals I landed heavily on said item. A painful experience, which provided hours of amusement for everyone else

You’re right, I forgot the brake pads initially but sneakily added them in after your reply, using the edit facility. I have just realised that I have forgotten to include replacing one helmet as well.

Hi Ian

I assume yours was a rhetorical question. “Nigel what do you do to your bike ”. I think the answer is self evident, wreck it.

However, it is possible that during its young, informative, days it came under the undue influence of other steeds. They were a happy go lucky, dare devil lot and probably led it astray.

In my defence, I did decide to change one set of pedals and the rear shock just because it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Interesting,

Since building up the black Specialized Enduro in March 2005 My toll has been:

1 x chain
1 x freewheel
1 x set of 2 chain rings + bash guard
1 x set of brake pads
1 x cassette
1 x bottom bracket bearings (outboard type)
1 x tubeless rear tyre (which hilariously blew out in the lake district)
1 x set of DMR V8 pedals
1 x rear shock service
1 x collar bone

Not too bad really (apart from the collar bone). However, in the same period the number of uneccesary purchases has been:

1 x Heckler Frame
1 x Turner 5 Spot frame
1 x S-Works Enduro frame

1 x Marzocchi AM2 forks
1 x Rock Shox Pike forks
1 x Fox RP3 rear shock

Ho hum...

I try not to keep track. It's far too frightening.
It's an ill wind that never blows at all.
